Chapter 16 - The Gathering Storm

Daniel did not rush into the house like a madman to stop Clara from administering the poisoned tea. The toxicologist had assured him that five drops would not cause immediate death, only continued neurological suppression. To ensure Clara spent the rest of her natural life in a concrete cell, Daniel needed to execute the final phase of his plan with absolute, flawless precision.

The next morning, Daniel sat at the grand dining table, calmly sipping his black coffee and reading the morning newspaper. Clara walked into the bright, sunlit room, looking radiant and completely untroubled, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of his head.

"Good morning, darling,"

she smiled brightly.

"How is your mother today?"

Daniel asked, forcing his voice to remain steady and deeply concerned.

"She had a very peaceful night,"

Clara lied effortlessly, pouring herself a glass of fresh orange juice.

"But I fear she is slipping further away from us. We might need to start discussing end-of-life hospice care soon."

"Perhaps,"

Daniel agreed softly, suppressing the violent urge to flip the massive dining table.

"Actually, Clara, I received an urgent call from the London office this morning. The merger is falling apart. I have to fly out tonight and handle it personally. I will be gone for an entire week."

Clara’s blue eyes lit up with a sudden, unmistakable flash of greedy excitement, though she quickly masked it with a perfectly practiced pout of disappointment.

"A whole week? Oh, Daniel, I will miss you terribly. But don't worry about anything here. I will take perfect care of your mother."

"I know you will, Clara,"

Daniel said, his voice laced with a heavy, hidden double meaning.

"I trust you completely."
