Chapter 14 - The Financial Trail

While the hidden cameras silently watched his mother’s room, Daniel utilized his vast corporate resources to launch a massive, covert investigation into his own wife. He hired the most ruthless, discreet forensic accounting firm in the city, demanding a complete, microscopic audit of every single bank account, trust fund, and investment portfolio associated with the Carter family name.
He sat in a secure, windowless conference room in the city, waiting for the lead accountant to present the findings.
"It is remarkably brilliant, Mr. Carter, in a deeply terrifying way,"
the lead accountant explained, projecting complex financial spreadsheets onto the wall.
"Your wife has spent the last fourteen months methodically restructuring your mother’s personal estate. She has forged power of attorney documents to slowly liquidate high-yield assets and transfer massive sums of untraceable cash into offshore shell companies."
"How much has she taken?"
Daniel asked, his voice cold and devoid of all emotion.
"Nearly four million dollars so far,"
the accountant replied grimly.
"But that is just the beginning. We also uncovered a massive, newly minted life insurance policy taken out on your mother’s life. The sole, uncontested beneficiary is Clara. The payout is twenty million dollars."
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. It wasn't just a simple betrayal; it was a highly organized, multi-million dollar assassination plot.
"There's one more thing,"
the accountant added, pulling up a series of encrypted email transcripts.
"Clara hasn't been orchestrating this massive financial fraud alone. She has a dedicated partner. We traced the offshore accounts back to a private wealth management firm owned by a man named Julian Vance."
Daniel recognized the name instantly. Julian Vance was Clara’s supposed "childhood friend," a man who frequently attended their charity galas and holiday dinners. He was her secret lover, her financial conspirator, and her partner in murder.
"Freeze everything,"

Daniel ordered, standing up.
"Do not let a single penny move."
