CHAPTER 1 — THE SCREAM THAT BROUGHT ME HOME

The first thing I heard after eight months away was my mother screaming my name.

Not “Welcome home.”

Not “Daniel, you’re finally back.”

Not the happy cry I had imagined every night while sleeping alone in hotel rooms thousands of miles away.

It was a scream.

A scream filled with fear.

“DANIEL!”

My suitcase slipped from my hand.

It hit the marble floor of the foyer with a heavy crash.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I had just walked through the front door of my own house after a fourteen-hour flight from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Eight months.

Eight months of construction sites.

Eight months of oil fields.

Eight months of eating dinner alone while staring at a phone screen.

I had missed my mother’s birthday.

I had missed family dinners.

I had missed the little conversations that seemed meaningless until they were gone.

Every night, I told myself:

Just finish the project.

Just a little longer.

Then you’ll go home.

Then you’ll hug Mom.

Then you’ll fix everything.

But the second I heard that scream…

I knew I was too late.

Something had already happened.

“Mom!”

I ran toward the kitchen.

The door slammed open.

And my entire world stopped.

My seventy-eight-year-old mother, Evelyn Carter, was lying on the cold tile floor.

Her wheelchair was overturned beside her.

Her hands were shaking.

Her face was covered with tears.

And standing above her…

Was my wife.

Vanessa.

The woman I had loved for six years.

The woman I trusted more than anyone.

She was holding a thick wooden spoon.

Raised in the air.

Ready to strike.

Nobody moved.

Not my mother.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Then—

“Elena!”

A blur rushed across the kitchen.

Our twenty-six-year-old housekeeper threw herself over my mother.

The spoon came down.

Hard.

A terrible sound filled the room.

Elena collapsed.

Blood immediately appeared above her eyebrow.

But she didn’t move.

She covered my mother with her own body.

“STOP!”

My voice shook the entire house.

Vanessa froze.

Slowly…

She turned around.

For one second, I saw something in her eyes.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then it disappeared.

And something unbelievable happened.

She smiled.

A calm, fake smile.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was soft.

“You’re home early.”

I stared at her.

I couldn’t recognize the woman standing in front of me.

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa sighed.

Like I was the one being unreasonable.

“Your mother had another episode.”

I looked at Evelyn.

Then back at my wife.

“She became aggressive. I was trying to calm her down.”

My mother grabbed Elena’s sleeve.

Her voice barely existed.

“She hurts me…”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

My mother looked at me.

Her eyes begged me to believe her.

“She locks me in my room.”

Vanessa laughed.

A cold, uncomfortable laugh.

“Oh Daniel, please.”

She shook her head.

“She’s confused.”

I stepped closer.

“What did she just say?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She forgets things. She imagines things. She gets angry when she doesn’t get what she wants.”

My mother started crying.

“No…”

She pointed at Vanessa.

“She took my medicine.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“This is ridiculous.”

Then she looked at Elena.

“This girl has been poisoning your mother’s mind.”

Elena slowly lifted her head.

Blood running down her face.

“She’s lying, Mr. Carter.”

Vanessa turned.

“What did you say?”

Elena looked directly at me.

“Your mother is telling the truth.”

Silence.

I reached for my phone.

Vanessa noticed.

“Daniel?”

I called emergency services.

Her fake smile disappeared.

“You’re calling an ambulance?”

“Yes.”

“You’re seriously doing this?”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“Do you know how embarrassing this will be?”

I looked at the woman who had hurt my family.

“No.”

I paused.

“You embarrassed yourself.”

Twenty minutes later, paramedics carried my mother outside.

Before leaving, Elena grabbed my arm.

“Mr. Carter…”

I turned.

“Check the blue sewing box.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?”

“Your mother’s closet.”

Vanessa heard her.

Her entire expression changed.

“What did you say?”

Elena stepped back.

“Nothing.”

Vanessa moved forward.

“What is inside that box?”

A paramedic blocked her.

“Ma’am, stay back.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“What’s inside?”

Her answer came too quickly.

“Nothing.”

Too quickly.

And that was when I knew.

She was hiding something.

Something bigger than abuse.

That night…

I opened the hidden security system I installed before leaving.

Eight months of recordings.

I clicked the first video.

Then the second.

Then the third.

My hands started shaking.

Because while I was thousands of miles away…

My wife had been doing something inside my home.

Something I never imagined.

Then the next video loaded.

And I saw the person standing beside Vanessa.

May you like

My blood turned cold.

Because it was someone I trusted.
