THE BLUE SEWING BOX / Chapter 3 / 26

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET VANESSA TRIED TO BURY

Vanessa stood in the living room.

Calm.

Almost too calm.

“I was wondering when you would come looking.”

I stared at her.

“Where is the box?”

She smiled.

“What box?”

I stepped closer.

“The blue sewing box from my mother’s closet.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Daniel, your mother is confused.”

I looked around.

“You moved it.”

Her smile faded.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You’re accusing me?”

“Yes.”

The silence between us was heavy.

Then Michael walked downstairs.

My brother.

He looked nervous.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“You.”

He stopped.

“You helped her.”

His face changed.

“Listen—”

“No.”

My voice became cold.

“I don’t want excuses.”

Vanessa stepped between us.

“You’re making a mistake.”

I looked at her.

“You hurt my mother.”

She shook her head.

“You weren’t here.”

Those words hit harder than anything.

“You weren’t here.”

She repeated.

“You don’t know what I went through.”

I stared.

“You mean taking care of my mother?”

She looked away.

And that told me everything.

Then Elena called.

“Mr. Carter…”

Her voice sounded scared.

“Come to the storage room.”

I rushed there.

Inside…

Was the blue sewing box.

But it was open.

Empty.

Almost.

Except for one thing.

A small recording device.

I picked it up.

Pressed play.

And heard Vanessa’s voice.

“I need Evelyn gone before Daniel comes back.”

My blood went cold.

Then Michael’s voice answered:

“What if he finds out?”

Vanessa whispered:

“He won’t.”

I looked at Elena.

“This changes everything.”

But then the recording continued.

And the next words destroyed me.

May you like

Because Vanessa wasn’t only after my mother’s house.

She was after something much bigger.
