Chapter 10 - The Confession in the Shadows
Daniel placed the heavy metal box quietly back into the drawer, prioritizing Elena's immediate, visible panic over his burning curiosity. He walked over to the terrified caregiver, his face softening with deep, genuine empathy. He knelt beside her small cot, looking directly into her tear-filled, fearful eyes.
"Elena, you have to listen to me very carefully,"
Daniel whispered, his voice steady and fiercely resolute.
"You are not alone in this house anymore. I see what is happening. I know Clara is lying to me. But I cannot protect my mother, and I absolutely cannot protect you, unless you tell me the complete truth right now."
Elena trembled violently, her hands gripping the thin blanket covering her knees as if it were a shield.
"She is a monster, Mr. Daniel,"
Elena sobbed quietly, terrified of waking the sleeping woman down the hall.
"When I first arrived here, your mother was doing so incredibly well. She was talking, reading the newspaper, even walking briefly in the garden. Then, Madam Clara took over the medication schedule entirely."
"What is in the locked box, Elena?"
Daniel pressed gently, refusing to let her avoid the question.
"Vials,"
Elena confessed, her voice breaking into a fragile whisper.
"Small glass vials with absolutely no medical labels. Every night, before she goes to sleep, Madam Clara mixes a few drops of a clear liquid from those vials into your mother's evening tea. She told me it was a special liquid vitamin imported from Switzerland. But I noticed the terrible changes immediately. Every time your mother drinks it, she loses a piece of her mind."
Daniel felt a hot, blinding rage surge through his veins. His own wife was methodically, systematically poisoning the woman who had raised him.
"Why didn't you come to me immediately?"
Daniel asked, struggling immensely to keep his voice down.
"I tried,"

"A month ago, I packed my bags to leave and go directly to the police. Clara caught me. She showed me photographs of my younger sister walking home from school. She threatened to destroy my family."
