Chapter 17 - The Lover's Arrival

Daniel drove his sleek sports car to the international airport, ensuring Clara’s private security detail saw him check in for the transatlantic flight. However, he never actually boarded the plane. Instead, he slipped through a secure maintenance exit arranged by Detective Thorne and climbed into the back of an unmarked, heavily armored police surveillance van parked in the shadowy cargo lot.

"We are officially live, Daniel,"

Detective Thorne said, handing Daniel a heavy tactical headset.

Inside the dark van, a bank of glowing monitors displayed multiple angles of the Carter estate, both inside and out. For three hours, nothing happened. Clara moved about the house, dismissing the remaining household staff early and sending Elena to the guest wing for the night.

At exactly 11:30 PM, a sleek, black luxury sedan rolled quietly up the long driveway, its headlights completely extinguished. A tall man in a tailored dark suit stepped out of the vehicle and walked directly to the front door. Clara opened it immediately, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into a passionate, hungry kiss.

"Julian,"

Clara laughed, leading him into the grand foyer.

"He's finally gone. We have the entire house to ourselves for a week."

Inside the surveillance van, Daniel watched his wife embrace her lover and co-conspirator. He felt absolutely nothing. The love he once held for her had been completely burned away by the toxic acid of her profound betrayal.

"Audio is clear,"

Thorne noted grimly, turning up the volume on the hidden microphones.

"Did you process the final offshore transfers?"

Clara asked Julian as they walked toward the living room to pour expensive scotch.

"Everything is securely moved to the Cayman accounts,"

Julian confirmed, taking a sip of his drink.

"As soon as the old bat finally dies and the life insurance pays out, we disappear to Monaco. Are you ready to give her the final dose tonight?"

May you like

"I've been ready for months,"

Clara smiled coldly.
