Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

|

The armored SUV tore through the dark, winding roads of the Greek countryside, far away from the glittering lights of Mykonos. Emily sat huddled in the corner of the back seat, her beautiful silk gown torn at the hem, her entire body shaking uncontrollably.

Dante sat beside her, his face a mask of cold, terrifying calculation as he barked orders in rapid Italian into a satellite phone.

When he finally hung up, the silence in the cabin was suffocating.

“Where are we going?” Emily whispered, her voice cracking.

“To a secure location. A property that does not exist on any official registry,” Dante replied, his eyes scanning the dark road behind them for headlights. He turned to look at her, and his hardened expression cracked instantly.

He reached across the seat, gently pulling her trembling body into his arms. Emily didn't fight him. She collapsed against his broad chest, burying her face in his ruined tuxedo jacket, sobbing as the adrenaline finally crashed.

“I’ve got you,” Dante murmured fiercely, his large hand stroking her hair. “You are safe, Emily. I swear it.”

An hour later, the SUV pulled into a hidden, fortified driveway nestled deep within a dense pine forest. The safehouse was a rustic, isolated cabin, heavily guarded by armed men who emerged from the shadows.

Inside, the cabin was sparsely furnished but warm. Dante locked the heavy deadbolts behind them.

As he turned around, the dim light caught a dark, spreading stain on the white sleeve of his tuxedo shirt.

“Dante, you’re bleeding,” Emily gasped, panic flaring anew.

He glanced down at his arm as if he had just noticed it. “It’s a graze from a ricochet. Nothing fatal.”

“Sit down,” she demanded, her waitress instincts overriding her fear. She rushed into the small bathroom, grabbing a first-aid kit.

Dante sat on the edge of the leather sofa, peeling off his jacket and unbuttoning his blood-soaked shirt. His chest and shoulders were heavily muscled, marred by a map of old, faded scars that told the violent story of his life.

Emily knelt between his knees, her hands trembling as she cleaned the jagged graze on his bicep. Dante didn't flinch. He just watched her. His dark, intense eyes tracked every movement of her hands, burning with a vulnerability she had never seen before.

“Why did you throw yourself over me?” Emily whispered, taping the bandage down. “I’m just a fake fiancée. I’m just leverage for your money.”

May you like

Dante reached out, his calloused fingers gently tilting her chin up to meet his gaze.

“You haven't been leverage for a very long time, Emily,” he murmured, the space between them suddenly vanishing.
