Chapter 5 - The Contract of Deception

The silence on the terrace was deafening, broken only by the crash of the waves against the cliffs far below. Emily stared at the man across the table, her mind reeling from the revelation.
“If what you’re saying is true,” Emily said, her voice shaking, “then why protect me? Why not just hand me over to this rival family and let them deal with my father’s mess?”
“Because,” Dante smiled, a slow, predatory curving of his lips, “the four million euros your father stole belongs to the Moretti family. If the Konstantinos syndicate extracts the ledger from you, they take my money and use it to fund a war against my operations in Athens. I am protecting my investment.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, legal-sized document, sliding it across the glass table.
“What is this?” Emily asked, staring at the paper as if it were venomous.
“A contract,” Dante explained simply. “You are going to pose as my fiancée. We will be seen together at exclusive galas, restaurants, and private events across the Greek islands. The Konstantinos family will not dare to strike you if they believe you are under the permanent, absolute protection of my name.”
“You want me to pretend to be engaged to a mob boss?” Emily asked in disbelief, letting out a sharp, hysterical laugh. “And what do I get out of this arrangement?”
“You get to live,” Dante replied, his tone devoid of any humor. “And, once we draw out the men who are protecting your father and recover my money, I will wipe your family’s debt clean. You will be free to go, with a compensation package that will ensure you never have to carry a waitress tray again.”
Emily looked down at the contract. The terrifying reality of her situation settled heavily on her shoulders. She had no money, no passport, and assassins were apparently hunting her. Dante Moretti was her jailer, but he was also her only shield.
She picked up the expensive fountain pen resting beside the document.
“If you touch me without my permission,” Emily threatened, her eyes flashing with defiance as she looked up at him, “contract or no contract, I will find a way to make you regret it.”

Dante’s eyes darkened with a sudden, intense heat that made her breath catch.
“I promise you, Emily,” he murmured, leaning closer. “I will never touch you unless you beg me to.”
