Chapter 11 - The Return to Santorini

The dawn broke over the hidden cabin in a wash of pale, bruised colors. Emily woke wrapped in heavy blankets, the lingering scent of Dante’s cologne serving as the only proof that the passionate, desperate hours of the night had been real.
The space beside her was empty.
She pulled on one of his oversized sweaters and walked out into the main living area. Dante was standing by the window, fully dressed in tactical gear, speaking quietly but aggressively into his satellite phone. The tender, vulnerable man from the night before had been replaced entirely by the ruthless syndicate boss preparing for a siege.
He hung up the phone as she entered.
“Pack your things,” Dante ordered, his voice crisp and devoid of emotion. “We cannot stay here. Konstantinos has declared an open war. He hit three of my distribution warehouses in Athens overnight.”
Emily felt a cold spike of dread in her chest. “Where are we going?”
“Back to the fortress in Santorini,” Dante replied, strapping a heavy holster to his thigh. “It is the most heavily fortified location I own. We are going to lock the island down until my men can locate Nikos and eliminate him.”
The helicopter ride back to the cliffside estate was tense and silent. The beautiful, romantic illusion of their engagement had been utterly shattered by the reality of the violence surrounding them.
When they landed on the private helipad, the estate was swarming with heavily armed guards. It was no longer a luxurious villa; it was a military bunker preparing for an assault.
Dante escorted her directly to the secure panic room buried deep beneath the estate.
“You will stay in this wing,” Dante instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. “My men will bring you food. Do not open the doors for anyone except me or Marco.”
“Dante, please,” Emily pleaded, grabbing his arm before he could turn away. “This is all happening because of my father. Let me help you find the ledger. There has to be a clue I missed.”
Dante looked down at her, his dark eyes softening marginally. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek.

“Your only job is to stay alive, Emily,” he murmured fiercely. “Let me be the monster. I will end this.”
He turned and walked out the heavy steel doors, locking her inside the gilded cage, completely unaware that the key to ending the war was already sitting in her bedroom upstairs.
