Chapter 2 - The Velvet Trap

|

The night air in Santorini was usually heavy with the scent of sea salt and blooming bougainvillea, but as Emily stepped out of her apartment building, all she could smell was expensive tobacco and impending doom.

Dante opened the rear door of the armored Mercedes. He did not offer a polite smile or a gentlemanly gesture. He simply stared at her with those dark, bottomless eyes until she slid onto the plush leather seat. He climbed in right beside her, the sheer physical mass of him instantly suffocating the space inside the cabin.

“Drive,” Dante commanded the man behind the wheel.

The heavy car glided away from the curb in absolute silence.

“Where are you taking me?” Emily asked, pressing herself as far against the passenger door as possible.

“To a place where we will not be interrupted,” Dante answered smoothly, pouring two glasses of whiskey from a hidden crystal decanter in the center console. He offered her one.

“I don't drink with mob bosses who stalk me,” she snapped, refusing to take the glass.

Dante let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a shiver down her spine. “I prefer the term 'venture capitalist.' And you are currently my most volatile investment. Your father, Arthur, was a very clever man, Emily. He managed the offshore accounts for my family’s shipping enterprise. Five years ago, he siphoned four million euros into a ghost account and faked a fiery car crash on an Ohio highway to cover his tracks.”

“That’s a lie,” Emily whispered, though a cold seed of doubt began to take root in her stomach. Her father’s death had always been sudden, the closed-casket funeral a rushed, traumatic blur.

“I assure you, it is the truth,” Dante said, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. “My syndicate spent years hunting the ghost of Arthur Hart. We followed the breadcrumbs to your mother, and then, ultimately, to you hiding on this island. He left you something before he vanished, Emily. A key, a ledger, a digital code. I want it back.”

“I don't have anything!” she cried out, her frustration boiling over. “I came to Greece with two suitcases and a broken phone! If I had four million euros, do you think I’d be serving lamb chops for minimum wage?”

“That,” Dante murmured, his gaze dropping to her trembling hands, “is exactly what we are going to find out.”
