Chapter 19 - The Ashes

|

The Konstantinos compound was a burning ruin. Dante led Emily through the smoke-filled corridors, stepping over the bodies of fallen assassins with cold, mechanical precision. The remaining Moretti loyalists had secured the perimeter, trapping the surviving traitors in the main courtyard.

Dante kicked open the heavy double doors, stepping out into the fiery chaos of the courtyard, keeping Emily securely tucked behind his broad shoulder.

Nikos Konstantinos and Marco were pinned behind a shattered marble fountain, surrounded by a dozen Moretti guns. They had nowhere left to run.

“It’s over, Nikos,” Dante’s voice boomed over the crackle of burning timber, cold and absolute.

Nikos dropped his weapon, raising his hands in surrender, his aristocratic arrogance entirely shattered. Marco, however, stared at Dante with bitter, panicked defiance.

“You can kill us, Dante,” Marco shouted, spitting blood onto the paving stones. “But you still don't have the ledger! The girl swallowed it! She played you!”

Dante didn't even flinch at the revelation. He looked down at Emily, a dark, incredibly proud smirk touching the corners of his mouth.

“She didn't play me, Marco,” Dante replied smoothly. “She simply proved that she is a queen entirely capable of protecting her own crown.”

Dante raised his pistol, aiming it directly at the man who had been his right hand for a decade.

“For the betrayal of this family,” Dante stated, without a shred of emotion, “your sentence is death.”

He pulled the trigger twice. Marco collapsed instantly.

Nikos fell to his knees, weeping, begging for mercy. Dante signaled to his men, who dragged the sobbing Greek boss away into the shadows. The Mediterranean underworld had just been violently reorganized.

Hours later, as the dawn broke over the ocean, Emily sat in the medical bay of Dante’s private yacht, safely anchored offshore. A trusted syndicate doctor had administered a mild emetic, and the tiny, waterproof micro-SD card was finally resting on a metal tray.

Dante stood by the window, watching the smoke rise from the distant mainland.

Emily walked over, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his solid back. He turned around, pulling her into his embrace.

“The four million euros is yours,” Emily said softly, looking up at him. “The debt is paid. The contract is fulfilled.”

Dante reached out, gently tracing the line of her jaw.

“The contract was voided the moment I kissed you in that cabin, Emily,” Dante murmured, his dark eyes intense and incredibly vulnerable. “You are free to go. The passports are ready. The money is in the Swiss account. You have your freedom.”

Emily looked at the most terrifying man in Europe, the man who had waged a war to save her life. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling his face down to hers.

“I don't want to go,” Emily whispered against his lips. “I want to stay right here, in the dark, with you.”
