Chapter 14 - The Ultimatum

|

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard Emily thought his teeth would shatter. The romantic vulnerability of the cabin was entirely gone, replaced by the terrifying, ruthless head of the Moretti syndicate facing a civilian who dared to hold his empire hostage.

“You do not dictate terms to me, Emily,” Dante warned, his voice low and vibrating with menace. He took another step forward, his immense physical presence threatening to crush her resolve. “Hand over the drive. Now.”

Emily stood her ground, though her knees were trembling. “The original contract stated that if I played the fake fiancée to draw out the enemy, you would clear my debt. But the situation has changed. I hold the actual ledger. I hold the money.”

Dante stopped mere inches from her. His eyes were dark, churning storms of fury and undeniable, shocking respect. He had expected her to break. Instead, she was staring the devil in the eye and negotiating.

“What do you want?” Dante demanded, his chest heaving slightly.

“I want absolute freedom,” Emily stated, her chin held high. “I want a new identity, clean passports for myself and my mother back in Ohio, and two million euros deposited into an untraceable Swiss account. I want out of this life, Dante. Completely.”

Dante stared at her, the silence stretching into an agonizing eternity.

He suddenly let out a sharp, dark laugh. It wasn't a sound of amusement; it was the sound of a man accepting a terrifying truth.

“You ask for half my stolen fortune and a plane ticket to disappear from my life,” Dante murmured, leaning down so his face was level with hers. “You are truly your father’s daughter. Brilliant, reckless, and entirely maddening.”

He didn't try to grab the drive from her hands. He reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, the tender gesture completely at odds with the violent tension in the room.

“I accept your terms,” Dante whispered, his eyes blazing with a fierce, possessive fire. “But understand this, Emily. I will give you the money. I will give you the passports. But if you think a new name and a different country will stop me from finding you again, you are sorely mistaken. You are my partner now, not my captive.”

Before Emily could process his vow, the bunker’s emergency alarm began to blare—a deafening, piercing siren that echoed violently through the concrete walls.
