Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

|

Six months later, the violent upheaval of the Konstantinos war was nothing but a bloody memory. Dante Moretti had solidified his absolute control over the Mediterranean shipping lanes, ruling his empire from the newly rebuilt, heavily fortified fortress in Santorini.

Emily stood on the sun-drenched marble terrace, wearing a flowing white silk dress, staring out at the breathtaking expanse of the Aegean Sea. She was no longer a terrified waitress hiding from her past. She was the undisputed matriarch of the Moretti syndicate, commanding the respect and fear of every capo in the organization.

Dante stepped out onto the terrace, wrapping his strong arms securely around her waist from behind, pressing a soft kiss to her bare shoulder.

“The new European port contracts are signed,” Dante murmured, resting his chin on her head. “The legitimate businesses are thriving. We are untouchable, mia regina.”

“We built a beautiful kingdom,” Emily smiled, leaning back against his solid warmth, tracing the heavy diamond ring he had placed on her finger months ago—no longer a prop, but a true promise.

They stood in comfortable silence, enjoying the profound, hard-won peace they had fought so brutally to secure.

But in the world of shadows and syndicates, absolute peace is an illusion.

A sleek, encrypted satellite phone resting on the glass patio table suddenly began to ring. It wasn't the standard phone used for local operations. It was a secure line, one that hadn't been utilized since Dante had taken over his father’s empire.

Dante’s posture instantly stiffened. The relaxed, loving husband vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating boss. He released Emily and walked over to the table, staring at the glowing screen.

“Who is it?” Emily asked, her instincts flaring as she recognized the tension in his shoulders.

“The country code is Russian,” Dante stated, his voice dropping into a dark, dangerous register.

He picked up the phone, pressing it to his ear without saying a word.

Emily watched him, her heart skipping a beat as a cold, terrifying smile slowly spread across Dante’s scarred face. He held her gaze, his dark eyes promising chaos and fire.

“It seems, Emily,” Dante whispered, lowering the phone, “that your father stole from more than just the Greeks. The Bratva wants their money back.”

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't feel the old, paralyzing terror. She simply stepped forward, standing shoulder to shoulder with the devil she loved, ready to face whatever new monsters were coming over the horizon.
