Chapter 40 - The Open Horizon

We decided to spend the last weekend of the summer at the coast.
The beach was relatively empty, the vast ocean stretching out in endless, rolling waves of deep blue and sparkling silver. The salty breeze tasted incredibly clean, carrying away the heat of the city.
My father sat comfortably in a folding canvas chair near the dunes, his trusty cane resting in the sand beside him. He was wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, contentedly reading a thick novel and occasionally looking up to check on us.
Leo was standing near the edge of the water, holding Samuel’s hand as they bravely chased the retreating tide, laughing loudly every time the cold water rushed back to splash their bare feet.
I stood on the warm, soft sand a few yards away, simply watching them.
The three generations of my life, all gathered together on one beautiful, sunlit horizon. The formidable, loving grandfather who had fiercely protected us. The energetic, joyous son who carried the beautiful legacy of a man I would always love. And the kind, patient mechanic who was helping me build an entirely new chapter.
I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the fresh ocean air.
There were no more courtrooms to fear. There were no more cruel, aristocratic mothers trying to erase my existence. The agonizing grief that had once threatened to completely drown me had finally transformed into a deep, quiet well of immense strength.
I had fought a brutal war to protect my child, and in the process, I had found my true, undeniable power.
Samuel turned around, his face glowing with pure happiness, and waved excitedly at me.
“Mommy! Come play!” Samuel shouted over the sound of the crashing waves.
I smiled, a massive, brilliant expression that felt completely weightless, entirely free.

“I’m coming, Sammy!” I called back.
I kicked off my sandals, feeling the warm, grounding sand beneath my feet, and ran joyously toward the water, running straight toward the beautiful, bright future we had so fiercely fought to build.
