Chapter 37 - The Expansion

|
The Gabriel Langham Fund had grown far beyond my wildest initial expectations. What had started as a small, desperate legal clinic in a renovated office space had transformed into a massive, highly respected state-wide advocacy network.
On a bustling Friday morning, we held a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open our third, fully-staffed clinic in the neighboring county.
The press was there, snapping photographs, but I no longer shied away from the cameras. I stood confidently at the podium, looking out at the crowd of supporters, politicians, and the brave women we had successfully protected.
“When we first opened our doors,” I spoke clearly into the microphone, “we made a simple, unbreakable promise: No woman should ever have to prove her fundamental humanity in order to be legally protected. Today, as we open this third clinic, we are ensuring that this promise reaches even further into the dark.”
I paused, turning to look at Elise Moreno, who was standing proudly beside the stage.
“This incredible expansion requires fierce, brilliant leadership,” I continued, smiling warmly. “And there is absolutely no one more qualified to lead this charge. It is my profound honor to officially introduce the new Executive Director of the Gabriel Langham Fund, Elise Moreno.”
The crowd erupted into massive applause. Elise looked genuinely shocked, pressing a hand to her chest before walking up to the stage to embrace me tightly.
“You didn't warn me you were promoting me in public, Nora!” Elise laughed through her tears, hugging me.

“You earned every single bit of it, Elise,” I whispered back. “You saved my life in that courtroom. Now, it’s your turn to run the fortress.”
Stepping back from the daily, grueling management of the clinics didn't mean I was abandoning the cause. It simply meant I was making room in my life for other things. For Samuel. For my father. And, perhaps, for myself.
