Chapter 16 - The Glow of the Firefly

I took his hand. “We are here now.”
He squeezed back. “Yes.”
Samuel ran toward us with a firefly cupped carefully in his hands. “Grandpa, look! It’s glowing!”
My father leaned forward with all the seriousness of a judge examining evidence. “So it is.”
Samuel opened his hands, and the firefly lifted into the evening air, blinking gold against the darkening yard. We watched it rise until it disappeared among the trees.
I thought of Gabriel. Of the night I left home. Of the courtroom floor. Of Beatrice’s rage. Of my father’s voice shouting my name. Of Samuel’s first breath. Of all the ways life can be shattered, and all the quiet ways it can be pieced together again.
Beatrice had tried to turn my pregnancy into a lie.
But my son became the truth that outlived her cruelty.
