Chapter 38 - The First Ride

|
Leo had one final, special surprise regarding the restored vintage motorcycle.
He drove up to our house on a sunny Sunday afternoon, pulling a small, beautifully painted, matching blue sidecar on a trailer. He spent two hours meticulously bolting the heavy steel sidecar to the frame of Gabriel’s Honda.
When it was finally attached and safety-checked, Leo handed me a sleek, black leather motorcycle helmet. Then, he handed an incredibly tiny, bright red helmet to Samuel.
“Are you ready to ride, Sammy?” Leo asked, his eyes crinkling with a warm smile.
Samuel was practically vibrating with excitement. He strapped the red helmet securely onto his head and eagerly climbed into the small, padded seat of the sidecar.
I put on my own helmet and swung my leg over the leather seat of the motorcycle, gripping the heavy chrome handlebars. My heart hammered with a mixture of nervous anticipation and profound, overwhelming joy.
Leo stood back, giving me a confident thumbs-up. My father stood on the porch, leaning comfortably on his cane, watching us with a massive, beaming smile.
I kicked down on the starter pedal. The engine roared to life, smooth and incredibly powerful. I engaged the clutch, gently twisted the throttle, and the heavy machine began to roll slowly down the driveway.
We didn't go fast, and we didn't go far. We just rode slowly through the quiet, tree-lined streets of our neighborhood. The warm wind rushed past us, carrying the scent of blooming flowers and fresh asphalt.

I looked down at the sidecar. Samuel had his arms raised high in the air, laughing with pure, unfiltered delight as the wind whipped against his red helmet.
In that beautiful, fleeting moment, the roar of the engine didn't sound like a ghost from the past. It sounded exactly like the joyous, unstoppable soundtrack of our incredibly bright future.
