Chapter 19 - The Burden Lifted

|

I read the letter twice, my emotions a chaotic swirl of anger, sadness, and an unexpected sense of relief. Beatrice’s words didn't erase the past. They didn't undo the trauma she had inflicted. But they offered a small measure of closure.

She had finally acknowledged her actions. She had finally taken responsibility for the pain she had caused.

I folded the letter and placed it in a drawer. I wouldn't reply. I wouldn't engage with her. But I felt a subtle shift within me, a loosening of the knot of anger that had resided in my chest for so long.

I didn't forgive her. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But I no longer carried the burden of her hatred. She was a broken woman, confined by the consequences of her own choices. I, on the other hand, was free.

I walked into the living room, where Samuel was building a towering structure out of colorful blocks. He looked up at me, his eyes bright with mischief.

“Look, Mommy!” he exclaimed. “It’s a castle!”

“It’s a beautiful castle, sweetheart,” I said, kneeling beside him.

I wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his soft hair. He smelled of sunshine and dirt, a scent that grounded me in the present moment.
