Chapter 34 - The Fortress

Bringing my father home from the hospital three weeks later was a massive logistical undertaking. We had to install a specialized hospital bed in the downstairs den, secure ramps over the porch steps, and hire a part-time home health aide.
My father, who absolutely despised feeling helpless, was incredibly grumpy during the first few days of his confinement. He hated the physical therapy exercises, he hated the bland dietary restrictions, and he violently hated needing help to get out of bed.
But Samuel was the magic cure for his foul mood.
On a quiet Saturday afternoon, I walked into the den carrying a tray of tea and found my father sitting in his specialized armchair, completely surrounded by a massive, chaotic fortress of couch cushions, heavy blankets, and dozens of wooden building blocks.
Samuel was wearing a plastic knight’s helmet, standing guard at the "entrance" of the pillow fort with a cardboard sword.
“Halt!” Samuel commanded playfully as I approached. “None shall pass! I am guarding the King’s castle!”
My father laughed, a rich, rumbling sound that I hadn't heard since his terrible fall. The deep lines of pain around his eyes had completely vanished.
“I am very well protected, Nora,” my father smiled, adjusting a blanket over his legs. “Sir Samuel has constructed an impenetrable defense system against the evil physical therapists.”
I set the tea tray down, my heart swelling with an overwhelming amount of love.

“It’s a very impressive fortress, Sammy,” I said, kissing the top of his plastic helmet.
Watching my son lovingly care for his grandfather was a profound, beautiful full-circle moment. My father had spent the last five years healing my broken heart and protecting our family from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, it was our joyous, dedicated privilege to protect him in return.
