Chapter 29 - Clara's Victory

The atmosphere in the Gabriel Langham Fund office was absolutely electric.
I stood in the center of the main bullpen, holding a finalized, stamped legal document high in the air. The entire staff had gathered around, their faces shining with eager anticipation.
“I just received the final ruling from the federal judge,” I announced, my voice ringing with triumph.
Clara stood near my desk, holding her newborn baby girl, her eyes wide and hopeful.
“The judge completely dismissed the fraudulent probate injunction with extreme prejudice,” I continued, a massive smile breaking across my face. “He formally ordered the immediate release of the full life insurance payout to Clara. Furthermore, he granted our counter-suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress, ordering the opposing family to pay massive punitive damages directly into a secure trust for this little girl.”
The office erupted into joyous cheers and applause. Elise Moreno popped a bottle of sparkling cider, laughing as the cork hit the ceiling.
Clara burst into tears, but this time, they were tears of profound, unadulterated joy. She walked over and hugged me so tightly I could barely breathe, carefully maneuvering the sleeping infant between us.
“You saved my life, Nora,” Clara whispered into my shoulder. “You saved my daughter’s entire future. I don't know how to ever thank you.”

“You don't have to thank me, Clara,” I replied, wiping my own eyes. “You just have to take this money, build a beautiful, safe life for your daughter, and never, ever let anyone make you feel small again.”
Watching Clara walk out of the clinic doors with her head held high and her baby completely secure was the greatest reward I could ever ask for. Beatrice Langham had once tried to destroy my life in a courtroom to steal my child's future. Now, I was using the legacy of that exact pain to ensure that other greedy, abusive families could never succeed in doing the same. We were turning the darkest poison into the most powerful medicine.
