Chapter 18 - A Letter from the Past

|

A few weeks later, a letter arrived in the mail. The return address was a state correctional facility. It was from Beatrice.

I stared at the envelope for a long time, my heart pounding in my chest. I hadn't heard from her since the trial. I debated throwing it away, tearing it into tiny pieces and letting the wind carry them away. But a small part of me needed to know what she had to say.

I opened the letter carefully.

Nora,

I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't even expect you to read this. But I needed to write it.

I have spent the last five years in this place, surrounded by concrete and steel, and the only thing I have is time. Time to think about what I did. Time to realize the monster I became.

I was so consumed by grief and anger after Gabriel died that I couldn't see straight. I couldn't accept that he had chosen you over me. I couldn't accept that his child was growing inside you, a child that I would never truly know.

I lashed out. I tried to destroy you, because I felt destroyed myself. But in doing so, I destroyed the only connection I had left to my son.

I am not asking for your pity. I am not asking for a second chance. I just want you to know that I am sorry. I am truly, deeply sorry for the pain I caused you and Samuel.

Beatrice
