Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

We didn't go back to the Long Island estate. It was too exposed, and I knew the Vitale family would be watching it. Instead, we drove to a heavily fortified safehouse hidden in the dense forests of Maine.
The property sat on fifty acres of private land, surrounded by a wrought-iron gate and patrolled by former military contractors loyal only to me.
When we walked inside, the fireplace was roaring. It was warm, luxurious, and secure.
I set a sleeping Lily down on the plush sofa, covering her gently. Sophia stood in the center of the room, looking entirely out of place in her worn clothes against the backdrop of million-dollar artwork.
“There are bedrooms upstairs,” I said, shrugging off my coat. “The kitchen is stocked. No one knows we are here except Enzo.”
Sophia wrapped her arms around herself. “How long do we have to stay here?”
“Until I clean house in New York,” I answered honestly. I walked over to the bar, pouring two glasses of bourbon, and handed her one.
She took it, her fingers brushing mine. A jolt of electricity shot up my arm, a painful reminder of everything we used to be.
“Your mother,” Sophia said, staring into the amber liquid. “What will she do?”
“She will panic,” I said, taking a slow sip. “She relies on my money and my reputation. Without me, she is just an old woman in a big, empty house.”

Sophia looked up at me, her green eyes searching mine. “Do you really think you can walk away from the syndicate, Dominic? For us?”
“I’m the Boss,” I stated softly. “I don't walk away. I change the rules.”
