Chapter 5 - The Address

|

The drive out of the city was a blur of heavy snowfall and roaring engines. I took the armored SUV, with Enzo driving and two trailing cars full of my best men.

Lily was asleep in the backseat, wrapped in my heavy cashmere overcoat.

I sat in the passenger seat, staring at the address Clara had given me. It was a rundown apartment complex on the outskirts of Albany. A place entirely unfit for the woman I loved, let alone the heir to the Moretti empire.

“Boss,” Enzo said quietly, keeping his eyes on the snowy road. “Breaking the engagement with the Vitale family... there will be a war. They won't take this insult lightly.”

“Let them come,” I replied, my voice devoid of emotion. “I’ve spent four years playing the good son, keeping the peace, expanding the business. And what did it get me? A hollow life.”

Enzo nodded slowly. “And your mother?”

“She is no longer welcome in my homes or my businesses,” I said coldly. “If she tries to contact the syndicate, cut her off.”

We drove for three hours in tense silence. When we finally pulled up to the crumbling brick building in Albany, the neighborhood was dark and silent. Streetlights flickered above broken pavement.

I stepped out of the SUV, the biting wind whipping my suit jacket. I carried Lily against my chest, shielding her from the snow.

“Secure the perimeter,” I ordered my men. “Nobody goes in or out of this building except me.”

I walked up the concrete stairs, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. After four years of ghosts, I was finally at her door.
