Chapter 19 - The Syndicate Queen

|

The wedding was the event of the decade.

It wasn't hidden in a safehouse. Dominic made sure all of New York saw it. He rented out St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Sophia walked down the aisle in a custom lace gown, looking like royalty.

As they stood at the altar, Dominic looked out at the pews. The heads of the remaining families were there. Politicians. Businessmen. They all bowed their heads in respect as Dominic slid the ring onto Sophia’s finger.

When they stepped out onto Fifth Avenue as husband and wife, the paparazzi flashes were blinding.

“Smile, Mrs. Moretti,” Dominic whispered in her ear, wrapping a protective arm around her waist.

“I haven't stopped smiling since you put the ring on,” Sophia replied, waving to the crowds.

At the reception, Sophia didn't hide in the corner. She sat at the head table beside Dominic. When the capos came to pay their respects, she looked them dead in the eye, answering their greetings with grace and a subtle, terrifying authority. She had fought Isabella Vitale; she wasn't afraid of these men in suits.

Enzo watched from the corner, raising a glass of champagne to Dominic. The message was clear. The Moretti family wasn't weak. They had a King, and now, they had a Lioness for a Queen.

But in the underworld, peace is always temporary.
