Chapter 20 - The Shadow in the Snow (Open Ending)

Three months after the wedding, life felt perfect. Dominic’s legitimate businesses were thriving, and Lily was enrolled in a prestigious private school.
It was late Friday night. Sophia was asleep in the penthouse bedroom. Dominic was in his home office, finishing up some shipping manifests.
His private phone rang. The encrypted line.
Dominic frowned and picked it up. “Speak.”
“Dominic Moretti,” a heavily accented, raspy voice came through the speaker. It wasn't Italian. It was Russian. “Congratulations on the nuptials. She is a very beautiful woman.”
Dominic’s blood ran cold. He stood up, his hand automatically reaching for the pistol in his desk drawer. “Who is this?”
“An old friend of Carlo Vitale,” the voice chuckled darkly. “Carlo was a fool. But he owed us a lot of money when you dismantled his operations. Money you now owe us.”
“I don't owe anyone anything,” Dominic growled. “If you step foot in my city, you won't leave it alive.”
“Oh, we are already in your city, Dominic,” the voice purred. “Check your balcony. We left a wedding gift.”
The line went dead.
Dominic sprinted out of the office and into the living room. He threw open the glass doors to the balcony.
Lying on the snow-covered tiles was the stuffed bear Enzo had bought for Lily on Christmas Eve. But its head had been severed, and a single black rose was pinned to its chest with a silver knife.
Dominic stared at the knife, his jaw clenching as a cold, familiar fury ignited in his veins. The game wasn't over. A new player had just entered the board.

He pulled his gun, chambered a round, and looked out into the dark skyline.
Let them come, he thought. I’ll bury them all.
