Chapter 10 - The Syndicate's Doubt

Two days passed in the Maine safehouse. Slowly, the thick tension between Sophia and me began to thaw. I watched her play with Lily in the snow through the reinforced windows, my heart aching with the lost years.
But my phone never stopped ringing.
On the third afternoon, Enzo arrived via a private helicopter. He walked into the study, his face grim.
“The Five Families called a sit-down,” Enzo reported, slapping a folder onto the desk. “Isabella’s father is demanding blood for the broken engagement. He’s telling everyone you’ve gone soft, that you’ve lost your mind over a commoner.”
I flipped open the folder. There were surveillance photos of my businesses in the city.
“They hit two of our shipments at the docks last night,” Enzo continued. “Your mother is making moves, too. She’s meeting with the capos, trying to have you declared unfit so she can act as regent.”
I let out a dark, humorless laugh. “She wants to steal my throne to protect her pride.”
“What are your orders, Boss?”
I looked out the window. Sophia was holding Lily’s hand, spinning her in circles. They were laughing. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
“Call the sit-down,” I said, my voice turning to ice. “Tell them I will meet them at the warehouse in Brooklyn tomorrow night.”

Enzo looked surprised. “Boss, if you go to Brooklyn, it could be an ambush.”
“I know,” I replied, pulling my favorite sidearm from the desk drawer and checking the chamber. “But if I don't show them exactly who runs this city, Sophia and Lily will never be safe.”
