Chapter 16 - Banishing the Matriarch

|

The next morning, Dominic’s armored convoy pulled up to the grand Moretti estate on Long Island. It was the same house where, just three days ago, the engagement party had shattered their lives.

Dominic walked through the front doors, Sophia by his side, her hand firmly in his.

Victoria Moretti was sitting in the formal dining room, sipping tea as if the world hadn't just caught fire. She looked up, her eyes narrowing as she saw Sophia.

“You have a lot of nerve bringing that trash into my home,” Victoria snapped.

“It’s my home,” Dominic corrected, his voice echoing in the cavernous room. “And you are a guest who has overstayed her welcome.”

Victoria stood up, her pride bristling. “I am your mother! I built the political connections that keep this family out of prison!”

“You orchestrated the kidnapping of my child and threatened my family,” Dominic fired back, stepping forward. “You are officially cut off. Your bank accounts are frozen. The syndicate no longer recognizes your authority.”

Victoria’s face paled. “You can’t do this. I have nothing!”

“You have a one-way ticket to a villa in Sicily,” Dominic said coldly, dropping an envelope on the table. “You will leave tonight. If you ever return to the States, or if you ever say Sophia’s name again, I will forget that you gave birth to me.”

Victoria looked at the envelope, then at Sophia, realizing she had completely lost. She snatched the ticket, her hands trembling with rage, and stormed out of the room without another word.

The shadow that had hung over Sophia for four years was finally gone.
