Chapter 4 - The Broken Engagement

I walked back into the grand ballroom. The string quartet was playing a waltz.
Isabella smiled brightly as she saw me approach, holding out her hand. “There you are, Dominic. We need to cut the cake.”
“The party is over,” I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried enough weight to make the people nearest to us stop talking.
Isabella’s smile faltered. “What are you talking about?”
“Enzo,” I called out. My underboss materialized at my side instantly. “Clear the room. Everyone goes home.”
Murmurs of shock rippled through the ballroom. Isabella’s father, a powerful capo in his own right, stepped forward, his face flushed with anger.
“Dominic, you disrespect my daughter in front of New York’s finest?” he warned, his hand drifting toward his jacket pocket.
“I am the head of this family,” I stated, my eyes locking onto his with a cold, dead stare. “And this engagement is officially broken. Take your daughter and leave my house before I forget I’m playing the role of a businessman tonight.”
Isabella gasped, tears of humiliation welling in her eyes. “You’re throwing me away? Over what?”
“Over a lie,” I replied flatly.

I didn't look at her again. I turned and walked toward the grand staircase. Lily was still sitting there, holding the photograph. I scooped the tiny girl into my arms. She felt so incredibly small, yet holding her anchored me to the earth.
“Come on, Lily,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to her dark hair. “We’re going to go find your mommy.”
