Chapter 9 - The Civil War

|
While the criminal proceedings moved forward, the fraudulent real estate document became an entirely separate, massive civil nightmare for Daniel and Lorraine.
Maya did not let the issue go. She hired a highly respected, independent forensic document examiner to thoroughly analyze the occupancy agreement Daniel had forced me to sign.
The examiner’s comprehensive report confirmed exactly what we knew: the original signature page I had signed for a simple "household expense account" had been physically detached and clumsily stapled to a draconian, highly illegal contract attempting to transfer partial equity of my grandmother's home to Lorraine.
Faced with severe, looming federal charges for felony document forgery and real estate fraud, Daniel and Lorraine completely panicked. They abruptly abandoned any and all claims to my property.
To desperately avoid a civil trial that would inevitably expose their fraud to the public and his employers, they agreed to a massive financial settlement. The settlement was paid directly out of Daniel’s untouchable 401k retirement account, completely decimating his long-term financial security. Furthermore, he was forced to sign an ironclad waiver, officially relinquishing any and all rights to challenge the asset division during our upcoming divorce proceedings.
Lorraine’s eviction was far less elegant.
She stubbornly refused to leave until the very last possible second of her thirty-day notice. She finally moved out under the watchful, unsympathetic supervision of two armed county sheriffs.
When I finally walked into the guest room after she left, I found she had petty, vindictive revenge in mind. She had left exactly three empty, cheap cleaning bottles on the freshly made bed, alongside a handwritten, ridiculous demand for "reimbursement" for her time spent "maintaining the household."
I didn't get angry. I took a photograph of the bottles and the note, and I immediately emailed it to Maya.
Maya happily filed the photograph as an official exhibit of ongoing harassment in our divorce proceedings, ensuring the judge saw exactly how unhinged and malicious my mother-in-law truly was.

As for Daniel, the consequences of his actions finally caught up to his professional life. He lost his lucrative, high-paying, client-facing job at the financial firm mere days after legally disclosing his felony domestic assault conviction to HR.
I never made a single phone call to his employer. I never tried to ruin his reputation. I simply, finally, stopped aggressively protecting him from the natural, devastating consequences of his own horrific choices.
