Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Circle

|
Three years after the violent slap that changed the trajectory of my entire life, I stood on the back porch of my sunny bungalow, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold.
The air was warm, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine.
Hope was running through the grass, chasing a bright yellow butterfly, her laughter echoing clearly across the yard. Marcus was sitting at the patio table, reviewing a case file, while Maya leaned against the railing, sipping a glass of wine and arguing good-naturedly with him about legal strategy.
We had built an incredible, formidable team. We were saving lives, dismantling abusive empires, and fundamentally changing the legal landscape for vulnerable women.
I looked down at my hands. There were no bruises. There was no trembling fear. There was only the undeniable strength of a woman who had survived the absolute worst and emerged unbroken.
Daniel and Lorraine were rotting in federal prison, their names completely erased from my world. They had tried to break me, to steal my home, to silence my voice. But they had tragically underestimated the fierce, primal power of a mother fighting for her child's life.
I walked down the steps and out into the grass, scooping Hope up into my arms. She giggled, wrapping her small arms tightly around my neck.
"I caught it, Mommy!" Hope declared proudly, pointing toward the butterfly fluttering away.
"You sure did, my brave girl," I smiled, kissing her cheek.

I looked back at my house, at my friends, at the beautiful, peaceful life I had fought so incredibly hard to build. The nightmare was a distant, faded memory. The future was wide open, bright, and completely ours.
We were finally, truly, entirely safe.
