Chapter 11 - A Request Denied

|

On the exact day of Hope’s first birthday, my house was filled with the sounds of genuine laughter, bright balloons, and the smell of a freshly baked vanilla cake. My sister, my friends, and even Maya had come to celebrate.

While Hope was aggressively smashing her tiny fists into her personal birthday cake, my phone buzzed quietly in my pocket.

It was a text message from Maya.

“Just received official notice from the court. Daniel’s formal petition to prematurely reduce the duration of the protective order was denied by the judge. Also, Lorraine’s frivolous small-claims suit regarding 'stolen furniture' was thrown out with extreme prejudice. They are officially out of options. Happy Birthday to Hope.”

I read the text message once. I didn't feel a sudden spike of adrenaline. I didn't feel a lingering sense of fear or dread. I felt absolutely nothing for them. They were ghosts of a past life that could no longer reach me.

I deleted the text message, slid the phone back into my pocket, and walked over to my beautiful daughter.

I scooped Hope up, her face covered in sticky white frosting and giggling uncontrollably, and carried her out through the open French doors and into the bright, sunlit garden.

I walked out into the grass, holding my daughter high in the air, feeling the warm sun on my face. For the first time in years, I looked toward the future with a heart completely, entirely devoid of fear.

The nightmare was permanently over. Our beautiful, uninterrupted life had finally begun.
