Chapter 16 - The Verdict

|
The trial lasted for three grueling weeks. The anonymous whistleblower, who turned out to be a former senior vice president at Daniel's firm, testified under a strict immunity agreement, completely dismantling Daniel and Lorraine's defense.
The jury deliberated for less than six hours.
I was sitting in my living room, watching the news coverage, when the verdict was announced live.
Guilty on all 42 counts.
The federal judge showed absolutely zero leniency for the mother-son duo who had systematically robbed elderly clients of their life savings to fund their lavish lifestyle.
Daniel was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison, to be served consecutively with the remaining time on his revoked domestic violence probation. Lorraine, sobbing hysterically and begging for mercy, was sentenced to twelve years.
The news anchor detailed the massive restitution orders, guaranteeing that Daniel and Lorraine would be entirely destitute upon their eventual release.
I turned off the television. The silence in my house was profound and beautiful.
I walked into Hope’s bedroom. She was fast asleep, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically, completely oblivious to the fact that the monsters who had threatened her existence before she was even born had finally been locked away forever.

I kissed her forehead, pulling the blanket up over her shoulders.
The chapter was finally, definitively closed. There would be no more appeals, no more threats, no more looking over my shoulder. They were gone.
