With the dark cloud of Daniel and Lorraine permanently removed from my life, I felt a sudden, massive surge of creative and professional energy.
I had always been passionate about advocacy, and surviving my own horrific ordeal had given me a profound, firsthand understanding of how the legal system could both fail and save vulnerable women.
I scheduled a lunch meeting with Maya at a quiet cafe downtown.
"I want to start a non-profit foundation," I announced, before we had even ordered our food.
Maya raised an eyebrow, looking intrigued. "What kind of foundation?"
"A legal and financial advocacy group specifically designed for pregnant women and new mothers escaping domestic violence and financial coercion," I explained, leaning forward. "We provide emergency housing, immediate legal representation, and forensic accounting services to help them untangle their finances from their abusers."
Maya smiled, a rare, genuine expression of warmth from the fierce attorney.
"That is a massive undertaking, Claire. It requires significant capital and legal infrastructure."
