Chapter 4 - The Quiet Return

|

I returned to the house at exactly 8:00 AM the next morning.

I did not go back because I was forgiving. I did not go back because I missed him. I returned because Detective Hale explicitly needed Daniel to be present and physically inside the residence to execute the arrest and serve the protective order simultaneously.

Maya had meticulously explained the tactical plan to me in the hospital parking lot before I drove home. I was the bait.

"You will enter the house only after texting Hale that you are at the door," Maya instructed firmly. "You keep the front door completely unlocked. You stay within five feet of an exit at all times. The officers will wait outside long enough to hear Daniel respond to your presence, establishing his aggression on their bodycams, but they will be close enough to intervene the second he moves."

This quiet return was absolutely not a surrender. It was a highly controlled, incredibly dangerous handoff.

I pulled into the driveway. My hands were shaking, but my resolve was absolute steel. I texted Hale a single word: Ready.

I unlocked the front door and pushed it open, leaving it slightly ajar behind me.

Lorraine was the first one to notice me. She was standing in the foyer, holding a cup of tea. When she saw me standing quietly with my small overnight bag, her face broke into a smug, victorious smile, exactly as if my absolute obedience had finally settled deep into my bones.

"I knew you’d come to your senses, Claire," Lorraine said with exaggerated, mocking grace, stepping aside to let me pass. "Daniel was worried, but I told him you'd realize how foolish you were acting."

I didn't answer her. I walked straight into the kitchen.

Daniel was sitting casually at the marble island, drinking black coffee. He was wearing his crisp navy blue dress shirt—the one he always wore for important client meetings to project an aura of reliable, trustworthy success. He barely even glanced up at my severely bruised, swollen mouth.

"Tell Mom you’re sorry for storming out," he demanded, his tone casual and commanding.

My phone was actively recording audio from inside my deep coat pocket.

"I went to the hospital," I stated clearly.

His coffee cup stopped dead halfway to his lips. Lorraine, hovering in the doorway, recovered from the shock first.

"For what?" Lorraine scoffed loudly. "A little marital argument? You are so incredibly dramatic, Claire."

"I went for the ribs Daniel heavily bruised," I said, staring directly into his eyes, "and the dangerous, stress-induced contractions he caused when he slammed me into the refrigerator."
