Chapter 13 - The Anonymous Source

|

I sat across from Maya in her sleek downtown office, staring at the copied pages of the ledger spread across the mahogany desk. The sheer scale of the theft was staggering.

"This details offshore accounts, phantom vendor payments, and heavily manipulated client portfolios," I noted, my mind racing. "Daniel was siphoning money from his clients, and Lorraine was laundering it through a series of fake LLCs registered in her maiden name."

"Exactly," Maya agreed, tapping her pen. "They were stealing millions long before he ever met you. That explains his desperate panic when you found out about the house deed. If you had hired a forensic accountant during the divorce, his entire corporate scheme would have collapsed."

"But who sent this to me?" I asked, looking at the blank envelope. "And why now?"

Maya pulled a single, typed note from the bottom of the pile.

"This was tucked inside the back cover," she said, sliding it toward me.

The note was brief, typed in a standard font, completely devoid of any identifying characteristics.

Claire. I watched him destroy you, and I did nothing. I watched her manipulate him, and I stayed silent. They ruined my career to save themselves when the firm started asking questions. I am facing federal indictment. If I am going down, they are coming with me. Give this to the authorities. They will know what to do.

"It's a whistleblower," I realized, the pieces falling into place. "Someone at his old firm who helped them facilitate the fraud. They are using me as the delivery mechanism because they know I have a documented history of successfully prosecuting Daniel."

"And because you have absolute credibility with the local DA’s office after the domestic violence conviction," Maya added with a sharp smile. "This anonymous source is handing us the silver bullet to put them both away for a very, very long time."
