Chapter 2 - The Escape in the Dark

I spent the rest of the evening in a state of hyper-vigilant compliance. I cooked dinner, I cleaned the kitchen, and I kept my bruised face turned slightly away from the harsh overhead lights. Daniel returned to his charming, jovial self, acting as if the violent assault had never occurred. Lorraine complained about the seasoning in the roast. I simply nodded and served dessert.
But beneath my placid exterior, my mind was racing with absolute clarity. The adrenaline was a cold, hard knot in my chest.
That night, I lay awake in our bed, listening to Daniel's heavy, rhythmic snoring. I waited until 2:00 AM, when the house was completely silent. I slipped out from under the duvet, my ribs aching fiercely with every subtle movement.
I didn't turn on a single light. I retrieved my hidden go-bag from the back of the guest closet—a bag I had packed three weeks ago when the tension first began to escalate into terror. I grabbed my passport, my identification, and a small stack of emergency cash I had secretly withdrawn over months.
I slipped out the side door, ignoring the pouring rain, and got into my car. I didn't start the engine until I had rolled it silently to the end of the driveway in neutral.
I drove straight to St. Catherine’s Hospital, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. My only thought was the terrifying stillness in my womb since the attack.
When I burst into the emergency room, the triage nurse took one look at my swollen, split lip and my rounded belly and immediately rushed me into a private trauma bay.
The cold gel of the fetal monitor hit my skin. For ten agonizing seconds, there was only the sound of static. I squeezed my eyes shut, a silent scream building in my throat.
Then, the rapid, furious whoosh-whoosh-whoosh of my daughter’s heartbeat filled the room.

I broke down. I cried so violently, so completely, that the attending nurse wrapped her arms around me and simply held my hand while the tears soaked my hospital gown. X-rays were avoided due to the pregnancy, but the thorough medical examination meticulously documented bruised ribs, a severely swollen lip, deep tissue back pain from the impact against the refrigerator, and most alarmingly, stress-induced contractions directly triggered by physical trauma.
When the hospital’s domestic violence advocate walked into the room and softly asked whether I had somewhere safe to go, I didn't hesitate. I pulled out my phone, unlocked the secure folder, and showed her the clear, undeniable video of her "charming" husband slamming me into a refrigerator.
