Chapter 6 - The Arrest

Lorraine panicked completely. She dropped to her knees, frantically snatched the scattered medical papers from the floor, and violently tore them in half, as if destroying paper could somehow undo reality.
"There!" Lorraine shrieked, throwing the torn pieces. "Now you have absolutely nothing! It's your word against ours!"
For the very first time that morning, a genuine smile touched my swollen lips.
"Those are just copies, Lorraine," I said softly. "The originals are in a federal evidence locker."
Daniel’s rage finally boiled over. He shoved me backward. My hip struck the heavy kitchen island, but I managed to catch the counter edge and stayed upright. He raised his hand again, his face contorted in furious, careless rage, entirely consumed by the need to punish me.
He moved exactly as the heavy front door swung wide open behind him.
"Daniel Mercer!" a booming, authoritative voice called out from the hallway. "Put your hands exactly where I can see them. Now!"
Daniel froze instantly, his palm suspended in the air just above his shoulder.
Detective Marcus Hale stepped solidly into the kitchen doorway, flanked closely by a uniformed, heavily armed police officer. My attorney, Maya Reynolds, entered calmly right behind them, clutching a thick manila folder containing the signed protective order.
Lorraine immediately pointed a shaking finger at me, playing the eternal victim. "She broke into our home! She aggressively provoked him! She's hysterical!"
Maya’s professional expression did not shift a single millimeter. "This is Claire’s separate, pre-marital property, Mrs. Mercer. Her name is the only name on the deed. You are trespassing."
Daniel slowly, mechanically released my wrist. The bright red fingermarks were already rising visibly against my pale skin.
Officer Grant stepped forward, grabbed Daniel’s arms, twisted them firmly behind his back, and placed him in heavy steel handcuffs. The metallic click echoed loudly in the silent kitchen.
While Daniel was being secured, Detective Hale pulled out a digital camera and methodically photographed my bruised wrist, the violently torn medical papers scattered on the floor, and the contents of my bag. He then pointed to the small camera above the pantry.
"That recorded the second shove, Daniel," Hale noted grimly. He pulled out his secure tablet, tapping the screen. Daniel’s own horrific threat from the night before played clearly and loudly from the device’s speakers for everyone in the room to hear.
“Don't ever disrespect my mother again... Now apologize.”

Lorraine’s manufactured confidence completely shattered. "He was just protecting me! She insulted me terribly!"
"An insult is absolutely not a legal defense to physical assault, ma'am," Hale stated coldly.
