Chapter 8 - The Shadowed Trust

|

While the protective order gave me physical safety, the financial reality of my situation was far more complicated.

A week after the court hearing, Marcus called me into his office for an urgent meeting.

“Hannah, we’ve been digging into Corey’s bank accounts as part of the financial discovery for the divorce filings,” Marcus said, turning a computer monitor toward me. “And we found something disturbing.”

On the screen was a detailed breakdown of my late parents’ estate trust.

When my parents passed away in a car accident four years ago, they had left me a modest inheritance of three hundred thousand dollars, held in a private trust intended for my future children’s education.

“Over the last eighteen months,” Marcus explained, “Corey managed to forge your signature on three separate financial proxy forms. He transferred over two hundred thousand dollars out of your trust account.”

“Where did the money go?” I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.

“It didn't go to personal expenses or mortgage payments,” Marcus revealed. “It was routed directly into a private offshore holding company registered under Lorraine Whitman’s name.”

I sat back in the chair, processing the sheer depth of their greed.

Lorraine hadn't just hated me because I refused to let her control my delivery room. She and Corey had been systematically draining my inheritance from the day we got married. The assault in the kitchen occurred because I had recently requested an annual statement from the trust manager—a statement that would have exposed their theft within days.

They were trying to secure legal guardianship over me and my baby before I could discover that my parents' money was gone.

“They didn't just want my baby,” I whispered, horrified. “They wanted to bankrupt me so I couldn't afford to fight them.”

“Exactly,” Marcus nodded. “This isn't just a domestic violence case anymore, Hannah. This is grand larceny, forgery, and financial fraud. The district attorney is going to upgrade the criminal charges against both Corey and his mother.”

I looked out the office window at the city skyline.

They thought they had trapped me in a corner. But every move they made only dug their graves deeper.
