Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

|

The blue and red lights of three police cruisers flashed through our living room windows five minutes later.

Corey tried to sprint toward the front door to control the narrative, but Mrs. Alvarez stood firmly in his way until two officers rushed into the house.

“He struck her!” Mrs. Alvarez shouted, pointing a finger at Corey. “She’s eight months pregnant!”

An officer immediately restrained Corey, pushing him back against the foyer wall while a female officer knelt beside me.

“Ma’am, are you okay? Do you need an ambulance?” the female officer asked, gently taking the heavy skillet from my fingers.

“My baby,” I sobbed, the adrenaline finally wearing off as terrifying cramps rippled across my abdomen. “I need to get to the hospital. Please.”

As the paramedics wheeled me out on a gurney, I saw Lorraine standing near the fireplace. She wasn't crying. She wasn't worried about her unborn grandchild. She was whispering furiously into her cell phone, her eyes fixed on me with pure hatred.

Corey was being loaded into the back of a police car in handcuffs. He called out to me as they carried my gurney past him.

“Hannah! Tell them it was a mistake! Tell them you fell!” he pleaded, his voice cracking with desperate performance. “I love you!”

I turned my head away and looked up at the night sky.

The man I married was gone. Perhaps he had never existed at all.

An hour later, I was lying in a private room at St. Jude’s Hospital—the very hospital where I worked as a triage nurse. The fetal monitor chirped beside my bed, broadcasting the steady, rapid heartbeat of my unborn daughter.

My close friend and fellow nurse, Sarah, squeezed my hand tightly as she adjusted my IV line.

“The ultrasound shows no placental abruption, thank God,” Sarah whispered, her eyes filled with tears. “Your baby girl is a fighter, Hannah.”

“She had to be,” I rasped, touching my bruised belly. “Sarah, I need you to do something for me. I need you to make sure Corey and his mother are banned from this entire floor.”

“They’re already on the security watch list,” Sarah assured me. “And Detective Miller is outside. He needs your official statement.”

I pulled myself upright against the pillows, my jaw set.

“Bring him in,” I said. “I’m ready to talk.”
