Chapter 5 - An Alliance in the Shadows

|

Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital under an assumed name.

With the help of my nursing union and Sarah, I moved into a secure, gated apartment building downtown. Corey remained in county jail, unable to post the fifty-thousand-dollar bail set by a judge who viewed the assault on a pregnant woman as a severe flight risk.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, I sat in the back corner of a quiet coffee shop five miles from the hospital.

A tall woman with dark hair and striking, solemn eyes walked inside. She scanned the room before her eyes locked onto my visible belly and the faint yellowing bruise on my cheek.

She walked over to my table and sat down without a word.

“You’re Hannah,” she said softly. Her voice was laced with a deep, permanent grief.

“I am,” I replied. “Thank you for coming, Elena.”

Elena looked at my belly, her eyes softening for a fraction of a second before hardening into steel.

“When the detective called me, I couldn't believe it,” Elena whispered, leaning across the table. “I thought Corey and Lorraine were done. I thought after what they did to me, they would be too afraid to try it again.”

“They almost succeeded,” I admitted, my throat tight. “If my neighbor hadn't opened the door... if I hadn't grabbed that skillet...”

Elena reached across the table and touched my hand gently.

“You survived,” Elena said. “That makes you the only woman who has ever stood up to them. But you need to know what you’re dealing with, Hannah. Lorraine isn't just a controlling mother-in-law. She is a sociopath who views children as property. She controls Corey completely.”

“Why did your name appear on the lawyer’s payment record for my guardianship papers?” I asked the question that had kept me awake for forty-eight hours.

Elena took a slow, deep breath.

“Because three months ago, Lorraine tracked me down,” Elena revealed, her eyes burning with anger. “She tried to blackmail me with old debt records from my past. She forced me to transfer money to a law firm, threatening to destroy my current business if I didn't comply. I didn't know what the money was for until the police showed up at my door yesterday.”

I leaned forward. “Will you testify, Elena?”

May you like

Elena looked down at her hands, then looked back up at me with fierce determination.

“I stayed quiet six years ago because I was broken and grieving,” Elena said. “I won't stay quiet again. Let’s destroy them.”
