Chapter 3 - The Hidden Papers

|
Detective Miller was a veteran officer with tired eyes and a quiet demeanor. He sat beside my bed, recording every detail of my statement as I described the assault, Lorraine’s encouragement, and the history of controlling behavior that had led up to that night.
“We found something in your husband’s truck during the impound search, Mrs. Whitman,” Detective Miller said quietly after I finished.
He pulled a manila folder from his leather briefcase and opened it on my bedside table.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Legal documents drafted by a private attorney three weeks ago,” the detective explained. “They are petitions for emergency medical guardianship and temporary custody of your unborn child.”
I stared at the papers. My name was printed across the top, alongside boxes checked for ‘mental incompetence’ and ‘incapacitation during labor.’
“They were planning to use these the moment you went into delivery,” Detective Miller said. “The documents state that due to alleged emotional instability, you were unfit to make medical decisions for yourself or the child. If you signed these under sedation, or if Corey was named your sole proxy, he would have had complete legal authority over your baby.”
A cold nausea washed over me.
Everything fell into place. The sudden insistence that Lorraine stay at our house for the final month of my pregnancy. The way Corey had insisted on taking over all my personal financial accounts. The subtle comments about my ‘pregnancy brain’ whenever I questioned their decisions.
It wasn't just a sudden burst of anger in the kitchen.
It was a calculated, deliberate coup designed to steal my child and strip me of my rights.
“They were setting me up,” I whispered, tears of rage stinging my eyes. “They wanted me to look crazy.”
“There’s more,” Detective Miller added, pulling a second sheet from the folder. “We cross-referenced the notary stamp on these draft papers. The lawyer who drafted them was paid from an account that doesn't belong to Corey or Lorraine.”
I looked at the name on the payment record.

“Who paid for this?” I asked.
“A woman named Elena Vance,” Detective Miller said. “Does that name mean anything to you?”
