Chapter 7 - The Restraining Order War

|
Three days later, I stood inside the county courthouse for the emergency protective order hearing.
Corey sat at the defense table beside his high-priced corporate lawyer, dressed in a sharp grey suit meant to make him look like an honorable, heartbroken professional. His mother sat directly behind him in the gallery, wearing a conservative black dress and dabbing at her eyes with a tissue for the benefit of the judge.
My attorney, a sharp family law specialist named Marcus Vance (no relation to Elena), sat beside me.
“Your Honor,” Corey’s lawyer began, standing up with a polished smile. “My client is a respected regional bank manager with no prior criminal record. What occurred on the night in question was a tragic, high-stress domestic argument between expecting parents. My client was merely attempting to calm his wife, who was experiencing severe emotional instability related to her late-stage pregnancy.”
The judge looked down over his spectacles. “Emotional instability?”
“Yes, Your Honor,” the lawyer continued, holding up a folder. “We have statements from Mr. Whitman’s mother detailing several instances of unpredictable, aggressive behavior by Mrs. Whitman in recent weeks. On the night in question, Mrs. Whitman brandished a heavy iron weapon against her husband.”
I felt a surge of rage, but Marcus touched my arm, keeping me anchored.
“Your Honor,” Marcus spoke up, standing calmly. “We have the preliminary medical report from St. Jude’s Emergency Department documenting blunt force trauma to Mrs. Whitman’s abdomen and arms. We also have the audio recording from the neighbor’s emergency 911 call.”
Marcus turned on a portable speaker on our table.
The sound of Lorraine’s voice filled the courtroom, high and clear: “Hit her again! Teach her who runs this family!”
Followed immediately by Corey’s angry voice: “Put that down! Put that down!”
And then my terrified, breathless scream: “Touch me again and I swear to God I will use this!”
The judge’s expression hardened instantly.
He looked at Corey, whose head was bowed low, his face burning red with embarrassment. Lorraine’s fake tears stopped instantly as she glared at the speaker.
“I have heard enough,” the judge declared, slamming his gavel down. “A full two-year order of protection is granted immediately against Corey Whitman and Lorraine Whitman. They are to remain at least five hundred feet away from Hannah Whitman, her residence, her workplace, and any medical facility where she receives care.”

Corey looked up, his eyes pleading as they met mine across the aisle.
I didn't blink. I walked out of that courtroom with my head held high.
