Chapter 16 - The Verdict

|
The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
“On count one, aggravated domestic battery against a pregnant person, how do you find the defendant, Corey Whitman?” the judge asked.
“Guilty,” the jury foreman announced clearly.
“On count two, attempted medical kidnapping and grand larceny...”
“Guilty.”
Corey collapsed forward onto the table, sobbing hysterically as the bailiffs immediately handcuffed him.
“On count one, felony conspiracy to commit aggravated battery, how do you find the defendant, Lorraine Whitman?”
“Guilty.”
“On count two, organized financial fraud and racketeering...”
“Guilty.”
Lorraine didn't weep. She simply closed her eyes as the judge handed down their sentences.
Corey was sentenced to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of parole for seven years.
Lorraine, facing the full weight of her financial crimes and conspiracy charges, was sentenced to eighteen years in a maximum-security federal facility.
The judge slammed his gavel down one final time.
“Furthermore,” the judge declared, looking over his bench at the defense, “this court grants Hannah Whitman full, absolute legal and physical custody of Maya Whitman. Corey Whitman’s parental rights are hereby terminated permanently.”

I closed my eyes and let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for nearly a year.
