Chapter 10 - The Infiltrator

The peace of the hospital room lasted for exactly four hours.
At seven in the morning, while I was resting with baby Maya sleeping soundly in the plastic bassinet beside my bed, a commotion erupted in the corridor outside my door.
I heard raised voices, followed by the sound of scuffling feet and a heavy thud against the wall.
Sarah instantly stood up from her chair near the window and stepped toward the door, but before she could open it, two security guards shoved a man into the room—holding his arms pinned behind his back.
The man was wearing green surgical scrubs, a disposable paper mask, and a doctor’s white coat.
The guard pulled the mask down, revealing the furious, desperate face of Corey Whitman.
I gasped, pulling the blanket up to my chest as my instincts flared.
“Get him out of here!” Sarah shouted, stepping between Corey and the bassinet.
“Hannah! Please!” Corey screamed, struggling against the guards’ grip. “I just want to see my daughter! You can’t keep me from my daughter!”
“You are in violation of a court order of protection, Mr. Whitman!” the lead security officer growled, forcing Corey toward the floor. “Keep moving!”
Corey’s eyes locked onto me, wide and unhinged.
“I know what you did!” Corey yelled as they dragged him out into the hall. “My mother knows! You won't get away with this! That baby belongs to the Whitmans!”
The heavy door slammed shut, cutting off his shouts.
I sat in my bed, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. He had managed to steal medical scrubs, bypass primary security, and reach my room disguised as a physician.
Ten minutes later, Detective Miller arrived on the floor.
“He’s under arrest for felony stalking, criminal trespass, and violation of a protective order,” Detective Miller assured me, his face grim. “Bail will be revoked entirely this time, Hannah. He’s going directly to county jail until his trial.”

I looked at little Maya, who was still sleeping peacefully through the chaos.
“He won't ever touch her,” I said, my voice cold and firm. “Not today. Not ever.”
