Chapter 14 - The Final Trap

|

As the date for the criminal trial approached, Lorraine realized that her empire was crumbling around her.

In a desperate, last-ditch effort to save herself, she attempted one final move.

It was a bright Tuesday morning. I was walking out of the pediatric clinic after Maya’s six-week wellness checkup, carrying her safely in her infant car seat. Sarah was walking beside me.

As we reached my car in the parking garage, a black sedan pulled up, blocking my vehicle from behind.

The rear door opened, and Lorraine stepped out. She looked haggard, her hair unstyled, her eyes sunken and desperate.

“Hannah,” she said, her voice raspy. “We need to talk.”

Sarah immediately pulled out her phone to dial 911, but Lorraine raised her hands.

“Don't bother,” Lorraine spat, stepping closer. “I know the police are monitoring my phone. I don't care anymore. I’m offering you a deal, Hannah.”

I placed the car seat securely inside my car, locked the door, and turned around to face her, keeping myself between Lorraine and my daughter.

“You don't have anything to offer me, Lorraine,” I said coldly.

“I have thirty percent of your parents’ trust money hidden in an untraceable account,” Lorraine bargained, her eyes darting nervously around the garage. “I will sign over the account passwords today. I will convince Corey to sign complete termination of his parental rights without a court fight. All you have to do is drop your civil lawsuit and tell the district attorney you overstated the assault.”

I looked at this woman—the woman who had ordered her son to punch my pregnant belly, who had tried to steal my baby, who had stolen my parents' legacy.

I let out a soft, mocking laugh.

“You really don't get it, do you?” I said. “You think everything in this world can be bought or negotiated.”

“It’s millions of dollars, you fool!” Lorraine hissed, her mask slipping into rage.

“I don't want your stolen money, Lorraine,” I said, stepping closer to her. “I want you behind bars. And if you take one more step toward my child, I won't wait for the police to handle you.”

Lorraine froze, seeing the absolute, unyielding iron in my eyes.

Sirens echoed in the distance. Sarah had already alerted the police.

Lorraine turned, jumped back into the sedan, and sped away into the afternoon traffic.
