Chapter 18 - A New Beginning

A year later, life looked completely different.
I had relocated to a quiet coastal town three hours away from the city, buying a cozy three-bedroom cottage with a flower garden in the front yard.
I had returned to work as a pediatric triage nurse at a local community hospital, where my colleagues welcomed me with open arms.
Maya was now a vibrant, curious toddler with bright blue eyes and a contagious laugh. She knew nothing of the dark history that preceded her birth. She knew only love, safety, and the warm breeze of the ocean.
One Saturday morning, Elena Vance drove down to visit us.
We sat on my back porch, drinking coffee while Maya played safely on the grass with Elena’s young rescue dog.
“I received a letter from the district attorney’s office yesterday,” Elena said, setting her cup down. “Corey tried to file an appeal for his sentence.”
I took a sip of my coffee, entirely unbothered. “And?”
“It was denied within ten minutes,” Elena smiled. “He’ll be serving every single day of those twelve years.”
I looked out at the ocean horizon, feeling the cool morning breeze against my skin.
“Good,” I said simply. “Let him spend those years thinking about what he lost.”
Elena looked at me, admiration shining in her eyes.

“You’re amazing, Hannah,” Elena said softly. “Most people would have been broken by what they put you through.”
“They tried to break me,” I replied, looking at my daughter laughing in the sun. “They just forgot that mothers don't break for monsters.”
