Chapter 40 - The Fall of Hastings

The aftermath of the hearing was swift and brutal. The physical evidence I presented on national television was too massive, too meticulously documented for even Hastings' closest political allies to ignore. The Department of Justice, pressured by immense public outrage and the undeniable paper trail, launched an immediate, full-scale federal investigation.

Within forty-eight hours, the FBI raided Senator Hastings' offices in Washington and Chicago. The Swiss banking group, terrified of international sanctions, officially froze all of his offshore accounts and handed the records over to federal prosecutors.

I was sitting in my coastal home, drinking a cup of coffee and watching the morning news.

The screen showed live footage of Senator Robert Hastings being led out of his Georgetown townhouse in handcuffs, his face shielded from the relentless flashes of the paparazzi. He looked broken, stripped of his arrogant power, reduced to a common criminal facing decades in a federal penitentiary.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was Clara.

"Anna," she said, her voice shaking with tears, but this time, they were tears of profound joy. "I just saw the news. My lawyer called. The judge signed the emergency asset freeze reversal. My trust fund... it's being returned. And the divorce was fast-tracked. I am completely free."

I smiled, feeling a deep, resonant warmth in my chest. "You earned your freedom, Clara. You survived the cage, and now the door is wide open. Go live your life."

"I don't know how to thank you," she wept softly. "You are my guardian angel."

"I'm just an auditor, Clara," I replied, tracing the scars on my palm. "I just balance the books. Enjoy the sunshine."

I hung up the phone and walked out onto my back deck. The ocean breeze was cool and refreshing. The massive political machine that had tried to crush us lay in ruins. We had proven that no one—not a violent husband, not a corrupt businessman, and not a sitting U.S. Senator—was above the ledger.

The monster was locked away, and Clara Hastings was finally safe.
