Chapter 37 - The Desperate Strike

Cornered animals are the most dangerous. Senator Hastings, realizing his political career and his freedom were hanging by a thread, resorted to the only tactic he knew: overwhelming force.

He couldn't find Clara, and he couldn't stop the national media frenzy, so he aimed his crosshairs directly at the source he suspected was behind the leak. He aimed at The Phoenix Initiative.

On Monday morning, a fleet of black SUVs pulled up to the front of our office building. But they weren't private security. They were agents from a specialized, highly politicized branch of the state tax authority—a branch directly funded and overseen by Hastings’ closest political allies.

Chloe burst into my office, her face uncharacteristically pale. "Anna, we have a problem. State regulators are in the lobby. They are executing an emergency, hostile audit of the foundation. They have a warrant to seize all of our digital servers and physical files under the guise of 'investigating fraudulent charitable operations.'"

"He is trying to confiscate the ledger through a bogus legal channel," Sophia realized, standing up quickly. "If they take our servers, they will destroy the evidence and claim we were running an extortion racket."

I stood up, adjusting my blazer. I felt the familiar rush of adrenaline, but there was no fear. I had built this foundation exactly for this kind of war.

"They can't seize what isn't here," I said coldly.

I walked out of my office and marched straight toward the server room, followed closely by Chloe and Sophia.

"Chloe, initiate the protocol," I ordered.

Chloe didn't hesitate. She walked over to a red, physical switch mounted on the wall behind a plexiglass case. She broke the seal and flipped the switch.

Instantly, the massive data servers in the room powered down with a heavy, mechanical hum. But they didn't just turn off. The proprietary software I had designed initiated a massive, irreversible overwrite protocol. Within ten seconds, every single piece of data on our local servers was encrypted, fragmented, and beamed directly to a secure, decentralized cloud server located in a non-extradition jurisdiction in Europe. The local hard drives were wiped clean, reduced to useless metal bricks.

We walked into the lobby just as the lead state agent was threatening our receptionist with arrest.

"Can I help you, gentlemen?" I asked, my voice echoing loudly in the quiet lobby.

The lead agent turned, holding up a warrant. "Anna Lawson? We are executing an immediate seizure of all foundation assets and digital records pending a fraud investigation."

"You are welcome to take the servers, Agent," I smiled, gesturing toward the back hallway. "But you will find them completely empty. Our data is stored internationally, strictly adhering to global privacy laws. You have no jurisdiction."

The agent’s face flushed with anger. Hastings’ desperate strike had hit an impenetrable wall. The Auditor was always one step ahead.
