Chapter 19 - Elena's Freedom
Two weeks later, the Haven Ledger office was filled with the smell of fresh coffee and pastries. The shattered window had been replaced, the floors polished, and the dark memory of Julian’s intrusion had been scrubbed clean.
Elena sat across from my desk, but she looked like an entirely different person. The heavy coat and defensive posture were gone. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. She looked radiant. She looked free.
She slid a thick, signed document across my desk.
"The divorce is finalized," Elena smiled, tears welling in her eyes. "I have full, sole custody of the girls. The house is legally mine, and the funds from the offshore account have been completely restored to my primary trust."
Sophia leaned against the doorframe, sipping her coffee. "Marcus Vance tried to negotiate a plea deal for Julian, offering a reduced sentence if he paid restitution. The judge laughed him out of the courtroom. Julian is looking at twenty-five years without parole."
"He deserves every second of it," Chloe said, sitting on the edge of my desk.
Elena reached into her purse and pulled out a small, beautifully wrapped box. She handed it to me.
"I didn't know how to thank you," Elena said softly. "You gave me my life back. You gave my daughters their mother back."
I opened the box. Inside was a delicate silver bracelet with a small, intricate charm shaped like a rising sun.
"It’s beautiful, Elena," I whispered, feeling a lump form in my throat. "Thank you."
"No, Anna. Thank you," Elena said, standing up. "You are an angel."
"I’m no angel," I smiled, snapping the bracelet around my wrist, right next to the scarred skin of my hand. "I’m just an auditor. I just balance the books."

Elena laughed, a bright, joyous sound that echoed through the office. She hugged me tightly, then hugged Chloe and Sophia, before walking out the front door into the warm morning sunshine.
I watched her drive away, feeling a deep, resonant peace settling into my bones. The ledger was balanced. The debt was paid.
