Chapter 27 - The First Strike

With the Aegis Vanguard account identified, we had the financial proof of Senator Hastings' embezzlement. But proving it in a court of law against a sitting U.S. Senator required an airtight, bulletproof strategy. We couldn't just file a civil suit; Hastings would use his political leverage to bury the judge and seal the records indefinitely.

"We need a preemptive strike," Sophia argued, pacing the conference room. "If we file an injunction quietly, his fixers will stall us until the money is moved again. We have to freeze the account before he even knows we are looking at it."

"How do we freeze an offshore account without a federal subpoena?" Chloe asked, crossing her arms.

"We don't use the American justice system," I replied, a dangerous plan formulating in my mind. "Aegis Vanguard is banking through a Swiss-backed financial institution in the Seychelles. Swiss banks are notorious for protecting client privacy, but they are absolutely terrified of international money laundering sanctions. If they suspect a politically exposed person (PEP) is using their institution to hide stolen funds, they will freeze the account internally to trigger a compliance audit."

I turned to my computer and drafted a highly technical, completely anonymous dossier. I included the IP address logs, the scatter-and-gather transfer receipts, and the direct link between Clara’s liquidated trust and the Aegis account.

"I am sending this directly to the Chief Compliance Officer of the Swiss banking group," I said, hitting the encryption key. "I’m flagging it under the international anti-corruption protocols. They will be forced to lock the account within twenty-four hours to avoid a massive scandal."

"And when Hastings realizes his money is frozen?" Clara asked from the corner of the room, her voice shaking with residual terror.

"He is going to panic," I said softly, walking over to her. "He is going to realize that someone is inside his impenetrable fortress. He will try to find the leak. That is why you cannot go back to that house, Clara. From this moment on, you are a ghost."

Chloe nodded in agreement. "I have a secure transport waiting downstairs. We are moving you to the Haven Ledger safe house on the coast. It’s off the grid, monitored 24/7, and guarded by my people. Hastings will not be able to find you."

As Chloe escorted Clara out of the room, I looked back at the digital ledger on my screen. The trap was set. The predator was about to realize that he had just become the prey. I traced the scars on my hand, feeling an immense, powerful calm. The Senator thought he ruled the world, but he was about to learn the hard way that an auditor always collects the debt.
